Two-vehicle collision results in one death

On Thursday, Nov. 5, Prestonsburg 911 received several calls regarding a two-vehicle collision which had occurred on U.S. 23, near the intersection of Big Branch and Abbot Creek. The two vehicles involved were a passenger car, a 2007 Toyota Camry, and a commercial motor vehicle, a 1998 Kenworth combination unit. Initial investigation by the Prestonsburg Police Department indicates the operator of the Camry, Samuel Kelly, 18 of David, was traveling south bound on US 23 when his vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic. Kelly struck the Kensworth combination unit, operated by Tommy Pease, or Ermine, in sideswipe manner. Kelly was pronounced dead on the scene by Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson and Pease was transported to Highlands ARH Regional Medical Center. Prestonsburg Fire and Police were assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police troopers, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Pikeville Police Department and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The collision remains under investigation by Capt. Ross Shurtleff and Lt. George Tussey.
